History of Belterra Casino Resort & Spa

In 1993, Indiana legalized riverboat casinos, and Hollywood Park Inc. was granted a license to operate one on the Ohio River in Switzerland County. The riverboat, which was built in Alabama, was navigating the Mississippi River in July 2000 when it hit a barge and suffered severe damage, necessitating the rescue of passengers.

Following the setback, the Belterra was repaired and eventually docked in Florence, where the casino was inaugurated on October 27, 2000. At this point, Hollywood Park Inc. had already rebranded itself as Pinnacle Entertainment. Pinnacle maintained ownership of the casino until 2016, at which time it sold the property to Gaming and Leisure Properties. The latter then leased the property back to Pinnacle.

Boyd Gaming Corporation purchased Belterra Casino and three other casinos in the region from Pinnacle in 2018. Despite this, Gaming and Leisure Properties maintained ownership of the real estate assets of those properties, and subsequently leased the property to Boyd.
