Indiana casinos

Bally’s Evansville history

In 1993, Indiana legalized riverboat gambling. Two years later, in December 1995, the Arizona-based hospitality company, Aztar Corporation, launched Casino Aztar, the first riverboat casino in the state. As per the law, the casino continually sailed on the Ohio River until 2002, when legislation allowed for dockside gaming. The casino was then stationed on land in Evansville. Within a year, it had attracted over 2.3 million visitors.

The property experienced several expansions, incorporating a few neighboring hotels before it was bought by Aztar Corp. This corporation was later bought by Columbia Sussex Corp. from Kentucky in 2007. The new owners of the property faced challenging times, including a bankruptcy declaration by Tropicana Entertainment, a subsidiary of Columbia Sussex and the parent company of Aztar Corp. Despite these hardships, Tropicana managed to recover and resumed full operation of the hotel-casino.

In 2013, the property underwent a rebranding and was renamed Tropicana Evansville. Two years later, in 2015, land-based casinos were legalized by the state. Consequently, Tropicana Evansville received permission from regulators to relocate to land in 2016. The transition process lasted for a year and a half, leading to the reopening of the new land-based hotel casino in October 2017.

In 2018, Tropicana Entertainment sold its land to Gaming and Leisure Properties and transferred the casino and its operations to Eldorado Resorts. Shortly after, Eldorado Resorts merged with Caesars Entertainment and continued operating under the Caesars brand.

When Bally’s Corporation acquired the operating casino from Caesars in June 2021 for $140 million, it already had ownership and operation of over a dozen casinos in the US. The same transaction led Gaming and Leisure Properties to lease the land to Bally’s at an annual cost of $28 million. By October 2021, the property was renamed as Bally’s Evansville Casino.
