Hoosier Lottery Profits Dropped Over The Past Year

Profits from Hoosier Lottery Decreased Over the Last Year

Posted on May 25, 2022

Sales and profits of the Hoosier Lottery have begun to decrease from their peak pandemic levels for the budget year. Despite this, lottery officials had anticipated the decline.

The Hoosier Lottery is projected to yield 11% less revenue for the state this year, as stated in a recent State Lottery Commission meeting.

Hoosier Lottery sales drop

The lottery’s current fiscal year concludes on June 30. This means we will soon have the final figures for the 2022 budget year.

The lottery is projected to yield profits surpassing $340 million during this period, a slight decrease from last year’s unprecedented $375 million earnings.

Clearly, no type of decline is optimal, but lottery officials anticipated a dip in the figures during the current cycle.

Last year saw a dramatic increase in lotto sales due to the pandemic. With limited entertainment options available across the state, Hoosiers found solace in playing the lottery.

Consequently, it resulted in various records that the State Lottery Commission acknowledged as unsustainable. Thus, anticipating a decline in sales this year as the world resumes normalcy, the Hoosier Lottery made plans accordingly.

Indeed, the lottery’s forecasts are still exceeding expectations. There’s a surplus of $15 million between the present revenue decline and the state’s anticipated plan.

Lottery momentum slows

After the new year, the lottery began losing momentum. However, sales were still set to reach another record high by the end of January.

This was primarily because an enormous amount of scratch-off tickets were sold, accounting for 80% of lottery ticket sales at the time.

Nonetheless, the lottery was unable to maintain that pace for the remainder of the budget year.

The numbers of the Hoosier Lottery typically see a positive increase from its annual Holiday Games collection. The decline in sales after Christmas could be partly attributed to the lack of these games.

Specific sales numbers for individual games have not yet been released by the lottery commission. Therefore, we need to wait a few months for the next annual report to accurately determine what Hoosiers spent their money on.

Online Indiana lottery games

The budget year of 2022 might be coming to an end, but the scenario could be significantly different around this time in the next year.

Currently, the Hoosier Lottery anticipates flat sales for the fiscal year 2025.

However, these forecasts do not consider the potential of online lottery games.

Earlier this year, the Hoosier Lottery attempted to introduce online games. However, lawmakers intervened to prevent this from occurring.

This year, online lotto games won’t be available to boost the numbers, but this may change in the future. It all hinges on the laws that legislators can pass in the upcoming legislative session.

Despite the introduction of new games, the lottery continues to hold a solid stance. With $340 million in profits for Indiana, it is undeniably impressive. If online lottery games are launched next year, the state could potentially experience a massive boom in 2025.
