Purdue Boilermakers Conference: Big Ten (West Division)

Purdue's football program has competed in the Big Ten West Division since 2014 when the conference expanded. The Big Ten West Division is made up of:

  • Purdue
  • Iowa
  • Minnesota
  • Nebraska
  • Northwestern
  • Wisconsin

The Boilermakers play each of the other five teams from its division on an annual basis.

The Indiana Hoosiers, which play in the Big Ten East Division, remains one of Purdue's biggest rivals. Meanwhile, the Boilermakers also have longstanding rivalries with both the Illinois Fighting Illini and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

How to read Purdue Boilermakers betting odds

When you first go to bet on Purdue games or any other college football action, you're going to see three main types of bets:

  • Point Spreads
  • Moneylines
  • Totals

There are many other ways to bet on the games but these are the main three. With that in mind, here's a brief explanation of how each works:

Point Spread

What the point spread translates to is a margin of victory. Whichever team you bet on has to “cover” that margin for you to win your bet. Let's take a look at this example:

  • Illinois +3.5
  • Purdue -3.5

The first thing you want to notice is whether it's a plus or minus sign. A minus sign means the team is favored and they have to win by that margin. In this case, Purdue has to win by at least four points to cover the spread.

On the other hand, a plus sign denotes the underdog. It also means that the underdog can lose by that margin or win outright, and you win your bet. In this case, Illinois can lose by three, two or one, or win outright, and you'd win your bet.

Moneyline

The moneyline strictly focuses on the outright winner of the game. If you bet the moneyline, all you need is your team to win outright for you to cash your bet. Here's what a moneyline would look like:

  • Illinois +180
  • Purdue -200

Once again, the key here is to notice the sign in front of the number. If it's a minus sign, that indicates how much you'd bet to win $100.

In this case, a $200 bet on Purdue would win $100. On the other hand, a plus sign tells you how much you'll win if you bet $100. In this case, a $100 bet on Illinois will pay $180.

Total

The total offers an alternate way of betting on football. If you're not sure who'll win, you can bet on the over-under. This is the combined final score of the two teams and you have to decide whether it will go over or under the set total.

Illinois Fighting Illini @ Purdue Boilermakers
Total: 48.5

For this line, the oddsmakers set the over-under at 48.5. That means you have to decide whether the final score will surpass that number or whether it will fall short.

High-scoring affairs like 60-20, 44-10 or 37-14 would lead to overs. If the final score was something like 25-23 or 17-10, those would be unders.

More Popular College Football Bet Types

Futures – Futures are a bet type that allows you to make long-term decisions. For example, if you wanted to bet on Purdue to win the Big Ten or win the National Championship. These types of bets take a while to decide but usually payout quite handsomely.

Parlay – Parlays are a type of multiplier where you make multiple selections. If they all win, you end up winning a big payday because the odds are multiplied. However, if any bet loses, you lose your entire parlay.

Props – There are mostly two types of props: player props and team props. These are bet that deal with the performance of a player or team. That might mean total receiving yards by a certain player in a game or betting on whether Purdue will score a touchdown in the final two minutes of a game.
