Carson Wentz is out indefinitely, so the football calendar is off to a rough start for the Indianapolis Colts.

Training camp just got underway on July 28. It didn’t take long for things to go south.

Wentz injured his foot at the end the end of practice on Thursday, and now second-year quarterback Jacob Eason is taking over the starter reps at camp.

The Colts aren’t sure how serious the injury actually is for Wentz. The team is running him through tests to determine that, but in the meantime, sportsbooks could start shifting Indy’s betting odds.

Colts odds could drop after Wentz injury

An injury for the starting quarterback is rough news for Colts fans. That news stings a little more for gamblers that bet on the Colts.

Sportsbooks had the team in the second tier of contenders when it came to Super Bowl futures odds. A level below teams like the Chiefs and Buccaneers, and a level above teams like the Dolphins and Patriots.

That placement was largely due to the uncertainty surrounding Wentz.

Since the quarterback is coming off of his worst season as a pro, sportsbooks were hesitant to bump the odds up for Colts bettors.

Toss a potentially serious injury on top of things, and sportsbooks could become extra bearish on Indy’s chances this season.

Most of Indiana’s online sportsbooks have the team’s Super Bowl odds sitting somewhere between +2,500 and +3,000. That gives the Colts similar title odds as teams like the Seahawks, Titans, and Cowboys.

 

If the injury report looks bad, then things will take a turn for the worse for the team’s futures odds.

Titans are now the AFC South favorites

Indy’s division odds are stable for now, but that could change in the blink of an eye.

The AFC South was set for another competitive year between the Colts and the Tennessee Titans. The two battled it out for the division crown last season, with Tennessee narrowly coming out ahead.

The Colts were very small division favorites when betting lines first opened. The Titans have taken a slight edge over the past handful of weeks.

 

Again, these odds could change dramatically in the very near future. Things could end up snowballing in either direction.

If the injury isn’t serious, then the team’s odds will likely remain stable. If Eason ends up starting in Week 1, then get ready for a nosedive.

There was already a lot of potential for Wentz to be a little shaky at the quarterback spot this season. If the team has to rely on a backup for the long-term, then sportsbooks won’t keep Indy in its odds position for long.
